Ode to Tofu

In the dimness of morning
His face greets me.
As surely as dawn,
Together our days begin.
I set him onto the earth.
He pitter patters behind my gait,
Spirals into a swirl of black and white
On the emerald velvet couch.
Like little bells
Kibble clinks against glass.
I brew coffee,
And he gazes at me.
He pees in the yard,
And I watch him.
Birds chirp,
And we listen.
Together,
We mosey our way to the sofa.
I kiss his face,
One or two or ten times.
He ambles in circles and with a huff
Huddles his restless body
Against my thigh,
His breath raises his diaphragm
Beneath my palm,
Needing closeness even in sleep.
